work from lighter to darker, never go with lighter tones atop darker tones, its a mess and only takes away the clearness of the color. else it depends on the paper and texture you’re tryign to draw. hold the pencil at a tilted angle, works best for me. do cross shading as well. do u want 2 specify on the thing youre drawin?

i work from shadows to highlights, i never use a base foundation for hair color. its more like rendering it in little pieces rather than making it all more detailed layer for layer. same for faces f.e.
